A few weeks ago, as the readers may have noticed, the Rector decided to ban this newspaper. I’m sure the many articles delved into this topic so I will not rave about it anymore. Instead I want to deliberate on another aspect which was not prominent in all the glorious media coverage this paper managed to conceive. I am referring to KSU’s inability to carry out their job. They failed to defend its students.
As if that was not enough, KSU president Carl “pussyfoot” Grech added insult to injury when he publicly refused to read Alex Vella Gera’s piece. “Whatever I say makes no difference” he exclaimed to Christian Peregin. What a letdown! How can KSU assess the situation if they are afraid to read the story, God forbids the Chaplaincy disapproves their behaviour. Even noted nationalists spoke against the ban. How can he and his team represent students and pressure authorities to safeguard student rights (taken from KSU’s website)? I do not recall this attitude during SDM’s campaign back in April 2009. What’s the point of electing a KSU if what they say makes no difference?
Well, it seems to me that the point of electing a KSU serves only to 13 self-minded narcissistic individuals. Now they can decorate their CVs with, what appears to be useless status. Of course the term useless solely refers to the student body, as one day these 13 individuals will boast about their early political achievements. This brings me to a curious event which occurred on campus; specifically in KSU’s conference room, under the nose of the aforementioned.
Angelo Micallef is the General Secretary of SDM. Apart from being notoriously obnoxious, he is also a staunch nationalist, and above all, he’s NOT part of KSU. The same man who on xarabank declared his disinterest towards girls and discos. Not that this fact has any relevance to the story, but I wanted to give a full picture of the main character. He’s a true conservative Catholic with space just for Jesus in his heart. This peculiar individual decided to interview the questionable-white-supremacist Norman Lowell in the conference room right next to KSU’s office. How come he had the permission to use KSU’s premises? Well, to quote Maltatoday, “bil-pjaciri” hux! KSU would not dream to interfere with one of their own. Throughout the interview Angelo is nosedived in his laptop typing frenetically whatever the bigot next to him says.
The interview starts with Lowell explaining his nefarious plot to take over the right-wing in Malta. I must add that he is the epitome of the neo-right wing politics, and that is why he attracts this much attention. Arrogant, intolerant, disillusion-oriented, vain, dogmatist but most of all a true bull artist. No wonder he was shortlisted for the Maltese motion picture “Maltageddon” – a comic for a comedy flick. But he couldn’t even get a role in the film, and yet he feels he deserves to represent Malta in the European Union!
The 35-minute interview revolved around Lowell’s notion that Malta is “bankrupt”. That is why he needs to start a new right-wing party. According to him, our country will turn into a scene out of an Oliver Twist story, with soup kitchens and all. In every village too. This will happen in the near future because we will be invaded by the wretched asylum seekers.
Then, the self-proclaimed saviour explains the origin of Imperium Evropa’s symbol. The lightning and sun designs represent creation, or “action with vision” to be more precise. And there I thought that Norman Lowell used the lightning symbol because, like me, he was a Harry Potter fan!
After he affectionately praised Angelo for being “very perceptive”, he reverted to his usual self and resumed his crusade to vilify sub-Saharan asylum seekers (you see, any immigrant coming from the North is not part of the equation that will lead Malta to “bankruptcy”). According to him, he would have single-handedly cleansed Europe from any unwanted genes if only he was elected MEP. The point is that he plans to “make their (referring to immigrants) life arduous enough” because “force is the only thing that these people understand”. Aren’t these statements defined as injuring public morals and decency? That’s the libel that this newspaper’s editor is facing. I would think that Angelo might be risking the same libel – after all everyone knows what Lowell stands for, so he must have known that Lowell would make those sorts of illegal comments. Then again he is from SDM, so I doubt he will be facing any charges.
Another interesting thing I noticed was that fact that Lowell ridiculed AN, but refrained from his usual belittling of AD. Maybe he realized that bad-mouthing the only genuine and honest party in Malta is counter-productive. Good for him! The high point of the whole interview is remains without a doubt the undesirable interruption made by s-cubed ex-president Carl Agius. It was not his fault of course, I am sure there weren’t any signs on the door “Racists inside”.
So there you have it. SDM can interview a criminal who incites racial hatred (on KSU premises), but Realta are banned because they print a short story containing foul language (to put it bluntly). Somehow, the fact that SDM are KSU means that the rules do not apply for everyone. This time round the chaplaincy refrained from interfering. This time round the rector refrained from attempting to silence SDM. This time round, KSU refrained from acting or even commenting, knowing them, because whatever they say makes no difference.
