Proportional Representation on Campus

Published on Sunday 7th March 2010

The University based, social-democratic organisation, PULSE is proposing to introduce proportional representation in the electoral system of the University of Malta. Elections are held yearly for the Students Council which is currently controlled by the Student Christian-Democrats organisation. SDM have been occupying KSU for these last years, blocking any representation of other organisations. For example the coalition of different organisations called ACT, failed to elect any of its representatives in KSU despite gathering 46% of the total votes.

By proportional representation, student organisations have a higher chance of getting elected in KSU as the system would be similar to the national electoral system. Thus the section which gets the minority of votes can still voice its opinion through the official bodies of University. PULSE refers to the current system as a system of winner takes all as it excludes the representation of other organisations who may not form part of the majority. Hopefully this would increase the participation of contesting teams and the number of students who bother to vote as the current turnout is very low.
