An Urgent Press Release

Some damning revelations...

Published on Thursday 18th February 2010

The University Of Malta and Junior College are being used as tools by economic entities, the State authorities and also the clerical class. The real reasons why there seems to be a great interest by the University authorities to shove out critical organisations such as Moviment Graffitti and the Realta' Collective is to let these entities do their dirty work unhindered.

The real reasons why the Ir-Realta' newspaper was banned indefinitely from JC by Principal Godfrey Muscat was because the first issue of the newspaper, back then called Realta' Madwarek revealed how a cleaning company at Junior College was given a tender with illegal conditions. Now it is safe to reveal this fact as the workers who revealed this information can no longer be traceable by their ex-employer. During the first court proceedings, Police vs Ir-Realta', this week, the current Principal of JC, Mr Schriha, admitted that he knew about the fact that some individuals were giving out free copies of issue 8 to JC students outside the premises. He said that this information was given to him by two lecturers of physics. He then ordered the security guards to send away the individuals who were giving out the newspaper but also admitted that he had no authority of what happens outside the JC premises.

Another damning revelation was also revealed during the court hearing by University Precincts officer Mr Joe Pace who said that a complaint to the Rector about issue 8 of Ir-Realta' was received when he forwarded a complaint which was submitted to him by two KSU officials. However he said that he could not remember who these KSU officials were.

With these revelations it is clear that KSU has a direct interest to shove critical groups out of University and by doing so, is directly serving the interests of the mentioned entities which are using the University as a tool. KSU has also staged a perfect attack on Moviment Graffitti by taking away their office which is now been handed over to SDM but until now the office is still being left unused. SDM controls KSU and KSU is also a tool for SDM and this was clearly shown to the public when Norman Lowell was allowed to be interviewed by an SDM official in the KSU office. It is a great shame that a person who propagates hatred to illegal immigrants should be welcomed in an official premises of the University. The same people who allowed a far-right extremist in the University are the same people who want to kick out the critical students..

Thus frustrated by these jackal ways the Realta' Collective would like to announce that it will support wholeheartedly any group which would contest the KSU elections against SDM so as to change this decaying situation in our educational institutions. These institutions should re-assert their position as places of education and to stop being a place to exert party politics, economical or religious power. If the current situation persists the Tertiary Sector in Malta will miserably fail, to show any positive results which could be comparable with those of our European counterparts.

The Collective would like to reveal that in 2008 Campus FM refused an application by the Realta' Collective to air a programme by students for students. The reasons given for this refusal were ambiguous and the group now feels that an ideological interest was involved to keep us out. We would like the to remind the public that Dr Mark Anthony Falzon had a repeat news programme blocked on Campus FM and the reason, which was given to him, by Father Joe Borg, was that he was critical of Minister Tonio Borg for sending back to Eritrea some illegal immigrants. These immigrants were later on tortured and killed. Karl Schembri was also blocked from reading excerpts of his novel called, Il-Manifest tal-Killer on Campus FM. If Campus FM censors criticism on ministers, modern literature and University Students than it is clear that Campus FM is a tool of state and clerical interests. It is a pity that the University's radio station is not independent and terribly against any innovative and critical elements.

However we would like to point out that what we are saying are only fragments of a much more wider and decadent picture and these few facts should give ample alarm to students about our educational institutions. We would like to re-assure the University Authorities and the police that Ir-Realta' will keep being published and disseminated as usual and no court cases or no libels will stop it from being published. And we would also like to re-assure that if SDM and/or KSU are working against us, we will not be the least affected. We again would like to appeal for any student group which would like to contest the elections for KSU to ask for our help.
